Trigger Point Dry Needling

A trigger point is a “knot” in the muscle tissue that may be tender to the touch. A trigger point may also cause “referred pain,” or pain which is distant from the trigger point. For example, a muscle in the hip can cause pain all the way down the leg, and may be mistaken for “sciatic” pain. Chronic trigger points can lead to dysfunction, such as in the spine, where a tight muscle can cause pressure on the nerves, leading to a cycle of pain and dysfunction

With trigger point dry needling therapy, therapists use a needle, similar to an acupuncture needle, and insert it into the skin and muscle directly at the trigger point. The needle causes an electrical effect. After needling, the spontaneous electrical activity ends and the muscle “let’s go” of its self-perpetuating contraction, allowing a chemical change, increased blood flow to the area, and relieving the pain.

At Sports and Rehab, the therapist will treat trigger points as part of a complete therapy program. It is important to deactivate the trigger points that are causing pain or dysfunction. But, it is equally important, to determine the root of the dysfunction. Therapists may also use several other treatment options, including the Graston Technique®, stretching, strengthening, and laser to assist the healing process and correct imbalances.
